What the Virginia SOL Grade 7 English Reading looks like
The Grade 7 Reading SOL uses passage sets — a passage followed by 6-10 items. The 2023 framework splits items between Literary Text (RL), Informational Text (RI), and Vocabulary (RV). Grade 4 weights literary at 55%; Grade 6 weights informational at 56%.
- Passage genres include realistic fiction, folklore, biography, historical fiction, and non-fiction articles at the grade-appropriate Lexile band
- Vocabulary items are tested inside passage sets, not as a standalone section
- Paper format: 40 operational items across 5 passage sets; CAT format: 28 items across 4 passage sets
Aligned to the 2023 VDOE standards
The Virginia Department of Education approved the 2023 English Standards of Learning on March 28, 2024, effective Spring 2025 administration. Each practice question in this book targets a specific 2023 SOL and cites the standard code (for example, 4.RL.3 for Grade 4 literary text analysis). You can trace performance by reporting category and focus review on the exact strands that need work.
